The Vía de los Andes is a 25 km spiritual, cultural and community pilgrimage that links churches and institutions in four districts of Santiago de Chile: Santiago, Providencia, Vitacura and Las Condes. It was born in 2025, promoted by the Círculo Chileno following an invitation from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, and since 22 September 2025 it has been an official stretch of the Camino de Santiago: its 25 km count towards the distance walked in Spain.

How to walk it
The route is open all year. You can walk it alone, as a couple, with family or friends, or join a group pilgrimage. Walking at a calm pace with stops to stamp and rest, plan a full day; first-timers, children or older people may prefer two days (day 1: from downtown to Providencia and Vitacura; day 2: from Vitacura to the Benedictine Monastery). Churches keep their own opening hours: check them before you leave, especially your starting church and the Benedictine Monastery.
Stamps: the only essential
To validate your pilgrimage you need at least four stamps on your credential:
- A starting stamp at one of the four downtown churches (Cathedral, San Francisco, San Agustín or La Merced).
- Two intermediate stamps at any of the points of the route.
- The final stamp at the Benedictine Monastery of Las Condes (it can also be stamped at the Círculo's office).
Validation in Santiago de Compostela
With the official Chilean Pilgrim Credential stamped along the Vía de los Andes, the 25 km can be validated in Compostela, so you only need to walk 75 km in Spain to complete the minimum 100 km for the Compostela. The Cathedral issues a Certificate of Distance covering both the Vía de los Andes and the Spanish stretch.
What to bring
- Your credential, protected in a plastic bag.
- Comfortable, broken-in shoes.
- At least 1.5 litres of water and some food.
- Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses; a light jacket.
- ID, some cash, a charged phone and a small first-aid kit.
